At a Church conference in April 1840, Latter-day Saint apostles Orson Hyde and John E. Page were called to a special mission. Instead of going out to proselytize, the two apostles were appointed to travel to "London, Amsterdam, Constantinople and Jerusalem" to converse with "Elders of the Jews" and collect information about the gathering of the Jews.
