Huge Church Project Renews Downtown, and Debate (New York Times) (February 8, 2010)
For many devout Mormons, Utah’s capital city is important mainly as a setting for the jewel that really matters: Temple Square at the city’s center. Brigham Young, the pioneer leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, laid out the urban grid with street numbers starting at the temple. The secular world was thus defined by the sacred core.

Mormon temple planned for Calgary (Calgary Herald - Canada) (February 8, 2010)
A Mormon temple featuring stained glass windows, granite finish and extensive landscaping will become an "iconic" piece of architecture in northwest Calgary and a private place of teaching and worshipping for members of the faith, church leaders say.

Hard works helps Collie make impact in rookie year with Colts (USA Today) (February 8, 2010)
The Indianapolis Colts' flight home following their 35-31 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Dec. 17 did not take off until after midnight. As quarterback Peyton Manning made his way up the aisle, he saw teammates with their heads buried in pillows. Others were lost to the rhythm of the music emanating from their headphones.

Collie's production not enough this time (Salt Lake Tribune - Utah) (February 8, 2010)
Smartly dressed and looking no worse for wear, Indianapolis Colts receiver Austin Collie walked into the interview room after Sunday's Super Bowl. Collie took his seat and took questions from the assembled media. There were exactly four questions from two reporters. As big time as he is, Collie didn't make a big name for himself as the Saints beat the Colts 31-17. He had six receptions for 66 yards, which isn't bad, but it wasn't the fairy tale end to what had been a fairy tale season.

Mormon missionaries resuming their work in Guyana (Washington Post) (February 8, 2010)
The Mormon church is slowly rebuilding its public profile in Guyana after the government ordered dozens of its missionaries to leave last fall because of outdated documents. Church spokesman Leslie Sobers said Saturday the church has resumed donations of medical equipment to charities in the South American nation.

Condie of the First Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be the speaker at Brigham Young University’s devotional Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center. LDS aid to Peru after quake ‘beautiful thing’ aid (Deseret News - Utah) (February 8, 2010)
Not a day passes that Rosa Maurtua doesn't lay her hand across the solid brick and mortar of her new house, relishing the security it provides. A "well built home" are three sweet words for Maurtua. On Aug. 15, 2007, a massive magnitude 8.0 quake struck her city of Pisco and other regions of western Peru. Hundreds were killed and thousands more lost their homes.

Countering subversive attacks on Mormon scholarship (Deseret News - Utah) (February 8, 2010)
I know I said we'd discuss Book of Mormon anachronisms -- and we will -- but I felt it was important to tackle a couple of less-conspicuous (yet primary and subversive) anti-Mormon claims that have direct bearing on many Mormon issues. Critics frequently state, or imply that LDS scholars are not real scholars. "Real" scholars (by which they mean, "non-LDS" scholars) reject LDS scholarship. LDS scholarship is biased.

New heritage area will use past to mold future (Salt Lake Tribune - Utah) (February 8, 2010)
The "Mormon corridor," a 250-mile swath of central and southern Utah, is dotted with small towns whose history will be preserved through a plan to increase tourism and economic development. At least, that is the intent of the management plan for the Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area, which was created by federal statute in 2006, and covers parts of six southern Utah counties and communities along 400 miles of highway.

Local Women Tie Quilts and Blankets for Haiti Victims (Placer Herald - California) (February 8, 2010)
In 4 hours the annual Relief Society Humanitarian Open House turned out 111 quilts and blankets, joining 100 more done previously this year. The annual event, sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has always drawn an eager crowd of quilters, but this year the haunting images of destruction in Haiti gave it a very real sense of urgency. The largest turn-out yet at 300+ women, there were mothers and grandmothers, daughters and granddaughters, young and old alike. “Most of the blankets and quilts will be in the arms of Haitian earthquake victims soon,” said Sherie Abel, event organizer. “The Sacramento chapter of Project Linus plans to ship our blankets to Haiti on February 26th.”
